For nearly as many decades as Maurice Sendak has been creating, there have been collectors and enthusiasts following close behind; and since 1970 I have been his primary representative in the sale of original artwork, signed prints, and vintage posters. What follows is information about rare periodical illustrations and ephemera generated during this period as well as where one can visit and view original Sendak artwork.

There is no question that Maurice Sendak is the leading book artist of his generation. As a student at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, Sendak was a frequent contributor to the student newspaper, Marquis; the earliest issue located with his pictures was published Spring 1944 (volume 5, number 2)--now part of the Betsy Beinecke Shirley Collection, in Yale University's Beinecke Library. By 1946 he was art editor for his senior high school yearbook The Legend. And in 1947 Sendak's first illustrated book appeared, Atomics for the Millions (Whittlesey/McGraw-Hill), written by his science teacher Hyman Ruchlis along with Maxwell Leigh Eidinoff.

In 1953 Elektra-Stratford Records in New York produced two record albums with black and pink jacket designs by Sendak--to my knowledge his first commercial designs. There Was a Little Tree: American Folk Songs for Children and Turkish and Spanish Folk Songs are both modest in appearance but extremely rare.
