JEFFERSON COUNTY - The shelves where trophies and awards will one day be displayed at Jefferson High School are under construction.
So is the gym.
And the football fields exist only as blueprints.
Still, athletic games have begun. Recognitions have started rolling in, and the ninth-graders - the school's first class - have begun building traditions for the Jefferson R-7 School District's first high school.
A quarter of these ninth-graders - the school's only class this year - have joined the football team. Their challenges include practices at the middle school, no home games and squaring off against teams with older players who can pummel them.
The first game was against St. Pius X - the school of choice for a handful of Jefferson R-7 parents who did not want their freshmen to be the district's guinea pigs.
The Jefferson R-7 School District, with about 700 students just south of Festus, was once the largest elementary district in the state. For generations, its graduating eighth-graders had to choose among three public high schools: Herculaneum, Crystal City or Festus.
