JENSON BUTTON blew his chance to rule the Brazilian Grand Prix from the front -- and win the Formula One World Championship -- in the rain-lashed farce of qualifying yesterday as his title rival Rubens Barrichello claimed a dramatic pole position.

Button, who needs to finish third to be certain of winning the title at Interlagos today, will start 14th on the grid after an afternoon beset by rain and mayhem.

The screening of Strictly Come Dancing was delayed -- and the TV coverage of Formula One moved to BBC2 -- as qualifying dragged on for two hours and 45 minutes, rather than the usual one hour.

By the end, Button's title ambitions were intact but severely damaged as Interlagos erupted in euphoria at Barrichello's brilliant pole lap and chants of 'Rubinho'.

Button's advantage is still in one piece, despite choosing the wrong tyres here.

Earlier on, he had been helped by Sebastian Vettel, of Red Bull, being eliminated in a dramatic opening session. The German finished 16th after struggling for grip in a desperate last lap, effectively ending his hopes of pipping Button to the title from 16 points behind going into this, the penultimate race of the season.
