Abbott Laboratories has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Solvay's pharmaceuticals business for 4.5 billion [euro] ($6.6 billion) in cash. Potential payments of up to 300 million [euro] will be added if certain milestones are met between 2011 and 2013, and the deal also includes assumption of certain liabilities, which Solvay today values at about 400 million [euro], the company says. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2010, pending approval from the relevant competition authorities.
