Article Excerpt Honda Motor Co. has stopped producing motorcycles at its plant in Marysville, Ohio, shifting all of its production to an updated facility in Japan. Honda announced last year that it intended to stop producing motorcycles in the United States, and start importing them from Japan. The new plant in Japan "has much higher capacity and it is closer to where motorcycles are engineered," says Honda of America Manufacturing spokesman Ron Lietzke. The new plant will allow for faster motorcycle development because "it will be easier and more efficient to implement new technologies in the product and in manufacturing." The Marysville motorcycle operation had its own extensive supply chain in the United States, "with a high percentage of domestic procurement," says Lietzke. "The operation was very successful in producing large bikes for many years, but this new plant allows us to make a better product for our customers, which is what it comes down to." The plant is being converted into an automobile parts consolidation center adjacent to Honda's Marysville auto assembly plant. Most all of the motorcycle employees were moved into new assignments in Honda's automobile operations.
Bobcat Co. has announced plans to consolidate its manufacturing operations in Gwinner, N.D., and close down its Bismark, N.D., plant by the end of 2009. "This was a difficult decision because Bismarck has been a vital part of the Bobcat story for more than 30 years," said Rich Goldsbury, president of Bobcat Americas. "Having lived and worked in the Bismarck community, I understand the impact this decision will have on my former coworkers and neighbors. We are disappointed, but this is a decision vital to Bobcat Company's long-term commitment to North Dakota." The company is suffering from construction industry demand that is off by more than 70 percent from its peak in 2005. About 475 people will lose their jobs.
