JOHN BARNES did not see it coming. At half-past nine on Friday morning he was bullish about his prospects at Tranmere Rovers and keen to show his passion and commitment to the club, despite acknowledging -- ironically, as it turned out -- that he could earn 'much more money' outside football.

He was interrupted by a fidgety-looking Jason McAteer, his No2. The door of the pokey office at Prenton Park opened and McAteer, the strain evident on his face, said: 'John, the chairman is waiting to see you. Now.' Five minutes later, one of the most gifted players ever to wear the Liverpool and England shirt had been sacked.

The speed of events at League One Tranmere was not only a shock to Barnes, it also reaffirmed the dismal record...
