One of the major issues facing educators of the gifted is observed easily if you enter a classroom that has been set aside for gifted students. You will immediately notice the relative absence of minority students, either racial or ethnic. This "disproportion" has come to the attention of many persons, some of whom see discriminatory practices by educators to be at the heart of the issue. The U.S. Office of Civil Rights has been alerted and has visited a number of school systems to determine whether unfair practices are being used to identify gifted students, resulting in this exclusion of minority students.
