The recent deaths of Michael Jackson, John Hughes and Patrick Swayze may make it look like somebody up there's got it in for the '80s.
But as the generation that came of age during the Reagan administration confronts mortality - not to mention financial insecurity and terrorist threats previously unimaginable in its safe, triumphal lifetime - its members can still look to the media business for comfort.
The pop culture of the 1980s is getting exploited like never before, and Generation Xers on the cusp of middle age can at least be reassured that their nostalgic urges will be catered to as assiduously as the baby boomers' who came before them.
Well, almost.
Nothing may ever top what's also been called the Me Generation's self-regard, nor the profit to be made from flattering it. But that group's younger siblings and eldest children are certainly giving their smug elders a run for their money.
"I look at the '80s as comfort food that you just enjoy," said Jonathan Shair, senior vice president of network operations for the Starz cable channels.
