- Back in 1993, a Columbia College film student named Jay Bliznick became turned off by major movie festivals that catered to marketing concerns and conservative audiences. So he and his partner Bryan Wendorf founded the Chicago Underground Film Festival, dedicated to raw, truly independent works that seldom, if ever, see the screens of mall theaters.

The annual CUFF takes off for its 11th time Wednesday and concludes Aug. 24. All movies will be shown at the 3 Penny Cinema, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago.
