Article Excerpt "Alien," (1979), director, Ridley Scott
Stars: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt
The plot: The only one that's a legitimate horror movie. Mining ship Nostromo, working for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, investigates a distress signal on remote planet LV-426. No one's there, but crew member Kane (Hurt) is attacked by a face hugger, and the crew brings him back to the ship. Eventually, it bursts out and grows up, killing off the Nostromo's crew. Science officer Ash (Holm) is revealed as an android charged with bringing the Alien back to Earth, regardless of threat to the crew. Warrant officer Ellen Ripley (Weaver) escapes the ship as it self-destructs, only to encounter the Alien as a stowaway. She blasts it out of the escape hatch's airlock and drifts off into sleep stasis.
What's notable:
- From the sinister eggs and Giger's womblike ship interiors to the face hugger's method of impregnation and the phallic shape of the adult Alien's head, it's a Cronenbergian nightmare of sexual unease
- Lt. Ripley proves an unwilling but competent hero (though Weaver is second-billed after Skerritt here)...
