Misleading claims, labels that require a dictionary to decipher and a lack of standards have left the jan/san industry wondering, 'What's really in this bag?' Ice melt manufacturers share their tips on what information is important to look for, what language to be wary of, and what to expect from a regulatory standpoint.
Once a year, jan/san distributors across the country gear up for winter. If the last two winters are any indication of what to expect, customers will be heavily arming themselves with the first line of defense against snow and freezing temperatures: ice melters.
It may not seem necessary to become an expert on a product used only a quarter of the year, but not doing your homework can lead to less than satisfied customers.
The Federal Trade Commission stipulates that claims be truthful, not misleading and should be substantiated, but because the ice melt industry does not have standardized test procedures for product performance claims, some ice melt manufacturers use confusing terms to describe their product's melting point, or claim that their product contains a certain ingredient, when it may contain little or offer little benefit.
Becoming familiar with the ingredients, learning to sort through the terminology on the bag and recognizing legitimate testing methods can help you decipher the label, and lead to finding the right product for your customers.
