Being a comedian during election season is like being a retailer during the holidays.

"If I were a department store, this would be Christmas week," said Mark Russell, a political satirist who has spent more than 40 years skewering politicians with his signature serenades.

Perhaps more than any comedian, Russell profits from the peccadilloes that entangle politicians and public figures. That's why he's returning to Skokie's Centre East this weekend, to thank Illinois for Senate candidate Alan Keyes and former nominee Jack Ryan.

"Keyes and a sex scandal," he said referring to the event that derailed Ryan's campaign. "That was a double gift."

Call it the comedy equivalent to the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but Russell is no partisan pundit. He lampoons Republicans and Democrats with equal zeal, although the president usually figures prominently no matter what his party.
