True unemployment might be triple the official government rate.

The official unemployment rate rose to 9.7 percent in August 2009, but that number is not close to the true number of Americans who are out of work. When counting the millions of people who have given up looking for work, who are in jobs that do not provide enough hours or pay, who are on disability, have taken early retirement or are incarcerated, the real unemployment soars to almost 30 percent, according to an analysis from the Center for Working-Class Studies at Youngstown State University.
