Article Excerpt A recommitment to the science and commercialization of a new generation of robotic systems could lead to the revitalization of American industry and innovation. But such a commitment has not yet been made by the U.S. government, universities and companies. As a result, new robotics with applications in medicine, manufacturing and logistics are being developed and deployed elsewhere in the world.
That is the finding from a robotics technology roadmap put together by more than 100 researchers in academia, industry and government. The country "needs the equivalent of a new Space Shuttle program to bring all of the technologies together" to create a new generation of robotic systems that can work in unison with people, are easy to program and network and can produce custom products quickly and affordably, says Henrik Christensen, who holds the KUKA Chair of Robotics at Georgia Tech.
Over the past five years, robotics systems have undergone a transformation from being dumb, large machines that do repetitive tasks and are difficult to program to being smart, agile systems with entirely new capabilities. "It is becoming increasingly evident that these early next generation products are a harbinger of numerous large-scale, global, robotics technology markets likely to...
