Through a small number of short videos crafted over less than a decade, Toronto-based artist Aleesa Cohene has achieved a remarkable maturity in her work. At first, I was misled by its apparent simplicity: as media artists have been doing for decades, she cobbles together found footage to explore themes such as immigration and xenophobia (All Right [2003]), or post-9/11 security paranoia (Ready to Cope [2006]). However, I was always left with a very palpable feeling of anxiety at each tape's end.
