Southwest Airlines Co.'s failed bid for Frontier Airlines is hurting United Airlines in the key Denver-Chicago market.

Dallas-based Southwest continues to add service after it was unable to land a deal that was expected to reduce competition on the route, which became the focus of a price war when the airline started serving it nearly four years ago.

The number of Southwest seats between Chicago and Denver, the eighth-busiest route in the nation, is up 40% from a year ago, even as the airline trims overall capacity 8%, according to Oak Brook-based OAG Worldwide LLC. That will keep additional pressure on fares at...
