Poverty in India: poverty, disease and suffering are on the rise in India devastating not just for India but for humanity in general.

South Asia is home to more than half of the world's poorest people and it has the lowest average GDP of any of the world's major geographic regions. India, the largest of the seven South Asian countries with a population of over a billion people, now has the largest number of hungry people in the world, with widespread poverty continuing to plague the lives of its citizenry. If poverty remains unchecked in India, the extent of suffering resulting from this neglect would be comparable in severity to Sub-Saharan Africa and exceed it in quantitative terms.

While there were divergences between the Nehruvian and Ghandian prescriptions for taking India out of the grip of poverty, they concurred that poverty was the principal problem facing the newly independent state in 1947. The Constitution of India therefore guarantees the "Fundamental Rights' for all Indian citizens and instructs the state to ensure these rights through the Directive Principles of State Policy. These principles instruct the state to direct its policy toward ensuring that Indian citizens--men and women equally--have the right to an adequate means of livelihood.
