Local criminal justice officials say they welcome Oregon Department of Justice plans to step up the state's role in investigating and prosecuting Mexico-based drug cartels operating in the state.

Attorney General John Kroger announced last week that Oregon has received a $1.5 million federal grant to create a drug crimes task force at the state agency.

The money will be used to hire the first DOJ prosecutors and investigators devoted exclusively to drug cases, department spokesman Tony Green said. Plans for the $1,531,744 grant include two new prosecutors, two...
