It is astonishing that it took this long for Cadalso's Noches lúgubres to be translated into English. The work's originality, its impact, the number of editions (forty-seven in the nineteenth century alone), as well as adaptations, rewritings and additions to the text produced, speak volumes of its significance. While Russell Sebold, whose large contributions to the field of eighteenth-century Spanish studies need no comment, does not ask why Noches lúgubres remained untranslated into English until now, he does situate the text and author within the Spanish and European contexts of Enlightenment thought and aesthetics, in his useful Introduction.
