IT was a goal worthy of being remembered on a day Tony Mowbray will do his best to forget. Not even the continuing emergence of Paddy McCourt as Celtic's new cult hero could smooth the furrows on the Parkhead manager's brow.

Mowbray entered the media conference at St Mirren Park on Saturday afternoon wearing an expression that melded disappointment, exasperation and frustration.

Refreshingly, a 2-0 victory was not allowed to mask a stern assessment of the performance produced by the Parkhead side as they strengthened their position at the top of the SPL to a four-point advantage over faltering Rangers.

While his predecessor, Gordon Strachan, would sometimes deliver baffling appraisals of stodgy displays that merely irritated disenchanted spectators, Mowbray fired a shot of truth about an 'unacceptable' showing.

He was spot on, too, as this was the kind of encounter that would have ESPN wondering just why they had bothered investing in the Scottish top flight. A subscription winner, it most certainly wasn't.
