RETAILERS are looking for tens of thousands of staff to cope with seasonal demand. Although most of these vacancies are for short-term and part-time jobs, some supermarkets are looking to fill permanent positions which offer career opportunities.

With a large proportion of those taken on aged under 26, these vacancies also give younger job seekers, among those hardest hit by rising unemployment, the opportunity to gain some valuable -- and paid -- work experience in a dynamic sector that is one of the few largely unscathed by the recession.
