Chief Justice Peggy Quince put the goal simply: "We want to make sure the public has access, and we want to make sure that confidential matters remain confidential."

At issue, laid out in In re: Amendments to Rules of Judicial Administration, case no. SC07-2050, were proposed amendments to Rule of Judicial Administration 2.240 on access to court records. And while the goal may have been simple, getting there isn't, as the court learned when it held oral argument on proposed amendments.

Most of the work on revising the rule was done by the Committee on Access to Court Records, chaired by 11th Circuit Judge Judith Kreeger. But several other committees and organizations chipped in with comments and suggestions, creating a veritable blizzard of proposals.
