In his suggestion that my critique of his Brice Marden review (C99 and C98, respectively) must be the result of personal neurosis, Sholem Krishtalka shuts down the possibility for honest debate. From my point of view, this is a deeply conservative gesture, coextensive with his critique of Marden's work. From Hilton Kramer to R.M. Vaughan, to certain Anglo-American rationalists, the conservative critique of art has concentrated on the policing of sense and poetry, favouring realism and reason, in the attempt to discredit other modes of understanding and render them unintelligible.
