In Portraits of the New Negro Woman, Cherene Sherrard-Johnson examines the representation of the mulatta figure in key literary texts of the Harlem Renaissance. As a figure that could both pass and represent the race authentically as a proper race woman, the mulatta served as a trope for the complexities of race as a visual epistemology. To study this trope, Sherrard-Johnson goes beyond examining literary representations that elicit the visual in their descriptions of mulatta figures.
