In the summer of 1955, a fourteen-year-old black boy from Chicago visited relatives in Mississippi, only to be brutally murdered by white men who had heard that he had crossed racial boundaries by daring to--depending on the source--speak fresh to or whistle at a white woman. The case is famous today because Emmett Till's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, refused the white authority's orders to leave her son's casket closed up and buried in Mississippi.
