If a group of health officials get their way, popping the top on a two-liter bottle of soda could cost you about 50 percent more.

A team of prominent doctors, scientists and policymakers think a tax on sugary soft drinks could be a powerful weapon in efforts to reduce obesity, in the same way that cigarette taxes have helped curb smoking.
