Few areas of American cinema culture, in the past ten years or so, have attracted as much attention as independent film, and few labels have been subject to as many contestations and qualifications as "independent." Both the attractiveness and the complexity of the independent sector as an object of scrutiny are reflected in the very word Indiewood, with its suggestions of subdivision (the idea that such a large and rich subject necessarily comprises a range of smaller, separate subjects) and blurred boundaries (the idea that independent film now enjoys a too-close-for-comfort relationship with the Hollywood machine; or, put another way, that mainstream cinema has acquired a more unconventional/artistic dimension). Geoff King takes a long, hard look at these issues and many others in this new book: a measured, analytical response to the more forceful writings of academics and journalists convinced of either the merits or the failings of this particular part of the American film spectrum.
