Some of America's most widely read columnists are alerting the country to the jobs situation and how manufacturing will be essential to an American economic revival. In an August 10, 2009, New York Times editorial, Bob Herbert said the real unemployment rate in the United States is 19 percent, which includes all of those Americans who have stopped looking for work. Unemployment is "by far, the nation's biggest problem and should be its No. 1 priority," he writes. "This should be the biggest story in the United States."
