Craig Hickman has long been a master of the delicate art of doing next to nothing with computers, while always doing it extremely stylishly and well.

He has, for example, written a computer program that turns good English prose into drivel - but interesting drivel. He has published beautifully crafted books full of nonsense text and photos.

Now Hickman, a professor of digital art at the University of Oregon, has turned his intricate attention to the world of gadgets.

Working in his home office in Eugene, an upstairs room that might pass for a latter-day Mr. Wizard's laboratory, Hickman has been creating a series of what he calls "Enigma Gadgets."
