DIETETIC TECHNICIANS MAY WORK INDEPENDENTLY OR IN TEAMS WITH REGISTERED DIETICIANS in the provision of food service and nutritional programs. Under the supervision of dieticians, they may plan and produce meals based on established guidelines, teach the principles of food and nutrition, or counsel individuals.

The Workplace

According to the American Dietetic Association (ADA), dietetic technicians work in hospitals, HMOs, clinics, nursing homes, retirement centers, hospices, home health care programs and research facilities. They may also be employed by schools, public health agencies, health clubs, wellness centers, and Special Supplemental Nutrition for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programs.

Educational Requirements

To become a registered dietetic technician (DTR), a student must complete at least a two-year associate degree. Coursework includes food and nutrition sciences, general science courses and food service systems management. The ADA notes that Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) accredited associate degree programs combine required dietetics coursework and at least 450 hours of supervised practical experience accredited by CADE....
