Mary Hilson has made a major contribution to Scandinavian studies in this concise, thorough, and well-written survey of contemporary Nordic history. While the publication of academic monographs and journal articles on Nordic history and social science has exploded in recent decades--much of it now published in English--concise yet solid surveys and analyses are relatively rare. An intelligent reader or course instructor seeking to move beyond "wikipedia" contributions is challenged to find thoughtful books that bridge the gap from superficial summaries to more advanced monographs. When such books are comprehensive, affordable, and accessible, the printing press is given a new lease on life.
Hilson's book is an excellent example of "contemporary history." It draws on an extensive historical and social science literature but seeks themes, developments, and analysis without wandering deeply into social science theory. When she addresses controversial events or personalities--and she touches on many of these--she provides a balanced overview and encourages the reader to seek additional detail...
