These two substantial volumes consist of a series of editions, translations, and commentaries on the corpus of Old Norse-Icelandic skaldic poetry concerned with Christian topics and themes. The poems included consist of some of the most famous poems in the corpus of Old Norse-Icelandic literature, Lilja, Geisli, Harmsol as well as others which are much less well known and some which are preserved only in fragments. The basic structure of the edition is that after some introductory remarks, each poem is presented stanza by stanza, with the Old Norse-Icelandic text first, followed by the Old Norse-Icelandic text in prose word order, a literal English translation, textual variants, and then full annotations on and discussions of the stanza.

The importance of the project can hardly be exaggerated--not least to the English-speaking world. Skaldic poetry is difficult enough that even scholars who are reasonably comfortable with reading Old Norse-Icelandic prose find it very hard to translate, and the translations...
