The second Chelsea Callaghan saw her friend's lip piercing, she knew she had to have one. "I've recently found myself. I know who am and who I want to be," Chelsea, 17, of Baldwin, New York, tells Choices. "A facial piercing is a form of beauty." A lip piercing seemed a great way to express her free and artistic spirit. Responding to her MySpace photo, friends agreed. "Girlie, seriously you are beautiful," wrote one pal. "Have you considered getting a facial piercing of some kind? I think you could definitely pull it off."

But Chelsea's parents opposed their daughter about getting the piercing. They didn't think that piercings looked good, and they worried that potential employers would be turned off by Chelsea's appearance. The result: Her mom and dad forbade her from getting the piercing.
Chelsea's battle with her parents is a familiar tale for most teens. Why? The teen years are a time when young people seek to have more control over their lives. But parents resist surrendering their own control because they aren't ready for their teens to grow up. And let's face it: It's a fact that teens are not fully mature and ready to make every decision themselves.
So what's a teen to do? It's impossible to never have a disagreement with your parents because there are too many issues--curfews, driving privileges, friends, wardrobe, chores, schoolwork--where teens and parents have different points of view.
