ABSTRACT

College algebra is a course that many students have difficulty with. It is a course that usually taken to satisfy the requirement in the core area of a degree program. Universities across the country are in constant search for new ways to deliver college algebra and in the process improve the success rate as well as the retention rate.

At Valdosta State University, we decided to compare the morning classes versus the evening classes. We believe that in the early hours of the day the students are more receptive to the material than in the evening hours of the day. We also believe that the morning classes have higher student retention rates than the evening classes.

Data was collected over a period of three years and analyzed. Our study found that morning classes have higher success rates on the final exam than evening classes. When comparing the retention rate it seems there is no significant difference between the morning and evening classes.

INTRODUCTION

Because it is a core requirement, college algebra is one of the most widely taken courses. Students find it very difficult and often do not succeed and have to retake it one or more times. There is a nation wide effort to improve education in general including college algebra.
