While space has been a central element of great power competition since the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957, it has only intermittently been a significant part of U.S. public policy debates since the end of the Apollo Program in 1972. Joan Johnson-Freese argues that this lack of debate means the United States has failed to properly exploit the opportunities offered by space, and so in Space as a Strategic Asset she seeks to revitalize the discourse on U.S. space policy. The book is intended to inform nonexperts on space policy, to highlight central issues in order to structure space policy debates, and to provide the author's views on how the central issues of the debate should be resolved.
