Early in his introduction to the anthology Yiddish in America: Essays on Yiddish Culture in the Golden Land, the eminent historian Edward S. Shapiro names Irving Howe's World of Our Fathers (1976) as the only book on secular Yiddish culture to examine the subject "in a comprehensive manner." Even so, Shapiro points out, Howe "emphasizes literature, politics and journalism, but neglects Yiddish movies, radio shows, poetry and political cartoons" (x). Yiddish in America sets out to fill some of these gaps.
The volume accomplishes this goal--modestly, as Shapiro himself asserts, lamenting that he was not able to find contributors to cover such significant areas as Yiddish politics, labor unions, schools, summer camps, publishing houses, and bookstores. (One might add that the book...
