Enforced Marginality: Jewish Narratives on Abandoned Wives. By Bluma Goldstein. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2007. xxv + 206 pp.

Traversing four centuries and two continents, Bluma Goldstein's interdisciplinary work traces the margins of Jewish texts to expose the plight of deserted wives. Autobiography frames the historical sections: we learn early that Goldstein's father abandoned her mother when she was an infant, and the final chapter is a moving reflection on the effects of his desertion. Goldstein traces the shadowy presence of abandoned women in the autobiographies of Glikl Hamel and Solomon Maimon, the stories of S. Y. Abramovitsh and Sholem Aleykhem, and the records of the National Desertion Bureau. She portrays abandoned wives, with a few notable exceptions, as muted, marginalized victims of Jewish patriarchy and feckless husbands.
