Later this year or early next year, the FAA is planning to provide RNAV approaches with a new line of approach minimums called LP. LP stands for "localizer performance," but you can think of it as the RNAV equivalent of a localizer-only approach. Or, more accurately, you can think of it as an LPV approach without the V, which stands for vertical guidance.

One of the most important tasks in designing an approach with vertical guidance (or APV) is evaluating a Glidepath Qualification Surface (GQS). The GQS is an inclined plane, aligned with the runway centerline, that spans from the DA down to the airport's runway threshold. It's the area you'd fly through if you hit DA and had the required visibility to land.
