LIFE IS HARD. BUT SOME YEARS ARE HARDER THAN OTHers, and this one has been a stunner for a lot of us. Many have bled money in the economic whirlwind. Others have lost jobs, homes, and the security of their retirement years. I've watched neighbors pack up and go in the middle of the night to avoid creditors. Houses stand vacant on every block. And that doesn't even count the traumatic upsets that routinely invade each season: the sudden diagnosis that changes everything, or losing a loved one in death or divorce.

The loss many folks share this year is perhaps the most serious deficit of all: Hope itself seems to have evaporated. Once that's gone, moving forward is next to impossible.

This brings many of us to the broom tree experience detailed in the story of Elijah. A broom tree is no great shakes when it comes to landscaping. More shrubbery than tree, this wide leafless desert bush squats in sandy soil, its long-needled branches waving broom-like clusters at the ends.
