"The army came here when I was a child. Every family here was affected by the conflict, everyone lost a relative, a father or a brother," says Juana Hu Mateo, leader of the Chajulense Association of Women United for Life (ACMUV), an organization creating new opportunities for women in the area.
Chajul is located in the Ixil Triangle, a remote coffee region in the Cuchumatanes Mountain Range where poverty touches 81% of the population and infant mortality is the fourth highest in the country, according to official statistics.
