This edited volume is intended to expand the realm of literature dealing with globalization processes and their impacts while also challenging Tom Friedman's assertion that those processes have leveled the global economic playing field, creating a "flat" world. Instead, the editors argue that globalization has led to the rise of major and lesser command centers in the global economy and that this has led to the concentration of most international migrants in selected urban places rather than to an even, flatter sprawl over geographical space.
