A little over a year ago I was traveling by bus from Washington, D.C. to New York City with a friend of mine from the Netherlands. As we began to approach the city on Interstate 95, my Dutch companion made a point to remind me that, as the saying goes, "Even old New York was once New Amsterdam." Going a step farther, he went on to demand, half in jest, that New Yorkers should give their city back to its rightful owners--the Dutch--because they were there first and the English had illegitimately taken the land by force back in 1664. True enough, I conceded, yet if we are to follow this logic, surely the land should be given to the descendants of the Lenape rather than to the Dutch.

Looking back, I like to think that I had the last word on that particular occasion, but other forces were at work to reclaim the Dutch legacy in New York just in time for the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of the river that now bears his name. To kick...
