"Italiese" is the linguistic premise of the play I panni sporchi si lavano in famiglia (Dirty Laundry Should Be Kept Behind Closed Doors) by Diana Iuele-Colilli and Christine Sansalone, both professors of Italian at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. The work debuted on February 8, 2008 and was presented by Le Maschere Laurenziane at Laurentian University's Thorneloe College Theater. The word "Italiese", coined by Gianrenzo Clivio, is derived by coupling the root of "italiano" ("the Italian language') and the suffix of "inglese" ("the English language"). The combination of the two languages is the linguistic basis of "Italiese" itself, which fuses Italian pronunciation with English vocabulary. "Italiese" developed over the years as an original spoken code which was a means of communication (and still is) among immigrants from different Italian regions with their own self contained dialects.
