Call it irrational prejudice but I've never thought of Wales as a dream holiday destination in the same way as, say, the Maldives or even the Cote d'Azur. Sure, there's the rugged splendour of Snowdonia, largely intact castles at every turn, Tom Jones and steam-train trips to places you can't pronounce.
But then there's Hi-de-Hi! and the chief of yellowcoats, Gladys Pugh.
No doubt it's unfair to dismiss a whole country because of one Eighties sitcom, but that might help to explain why the idea of a long weekend at a holiday park 30 minutes from Fishguard didn't initially appeal.
Pelting rain and an unwelcoming May chill hardly lifted the mood as our gang of four - myself, my five-year-old Euan, best pal Mairead and her nephew Marco, 7, followed the signs for Bluestone Park, set on 500 acres of national park on the coast of Pembrokeshire.
What we certainly didn't expect, though, was to turn off into a rather quaint village, with a winding main street lined by white-washed walls, smart new iron railings and a row of pastelcoloured houses.
Not a gaudy chalet or yellow coat...
