WHY can't Hollywood produce a credible movie about ballet? Credibility is only an intermittent virtue in the latest candidate for that hallowed honor, Robert Altman's The Company, which is still drifting through American theaters after a limited Christmas Day release. The sales of the DVD will doubtless insure that The Company secures a niche on the small shelf reserved for cinematic dance fiction. But I can't see anybody, except dance aficionados in desperate need of a boost to their self-esteem, going for this lusterless portrait of a midwestern ballet troupe, modeled after and featuring the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago.
