ALSTOM Transport recorded strong growth in 2008-09 (see table) and while Mellier is not complacent, he does believe that rail still looks forward to a bright future. "We are rather lucky to be in an industry that is not impacted too much by the crisis and Alstom is not exposed much to the freight sector," says Mellier. "Not one of our projects has been cancelled or slowed down.

"I'm not saying that I'm optimistic and everything is fine, but there are a lot of factors pushing to rail transport: urban trams and metros on the one hand and inter-city and high-speed on the other, which are very big markets," Mellier continues. "We are strong in infrastructure, turnkey projects, and signalling, and we have a worldwide exposure which is some protection against the crisis."
Mellier points to some of the national recovery plans around the world which will benefit urban rail. The United States plans to invest $US 11 billion and Germany 11 billion...
