MOST OF US LEARN WE LIVE IN A BRUTAL WORLD pretty early. My first lesson came in kindergarten on the day Warren Hunt punched me in the stomach. I hadn't done a thing to invite it. I just happened to be assigned the seat next to him in the circle of little chairs that comprised our reading corner.

It wasn't something I said, since I hadn't said anything--not given much to talking in any circumstance. The punch came out of nowhere, landed in my solar plexus and knocked the breath out of me. As I looked up stunned into this boy's impassive face, he muttered close to my ear, "And if you tell, I'll give it to you again." Sufficiently cowed, I didn't.

What makes one person bully another for no good reason? I pondered this with my 5-year-old mind for weeks. The punching continued, in random episodes, whenever Warren could plant his stocky figure between me and the teacher's view. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. The threat was so incomprehensible and the injustice so startling, I kept trying to figure out why he was intent on hitting me instead of concentrating on how to protect myself. Eventually I told...
