Article Excerpt National Nurses Week, designated as May 6-12, was first celebrated in 1990. Since 1996, May 6 is known as National RN Recognition Day (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2009a). This year's awards, recognition, and celebrations may just be a memory. However, the contributions, collaborations, and quiet caring from nurses are what patients value. Through a patient's eyes, the times when the nurse answers a call light or a question, intervenes to promote health, prevents injury, or just cares are the moments in which a nurse's value becomes immeasurable.
This year, the ANA proposed all nursing organizations participate in promoting the value of nursing. Many of the remarks in this article are a compilation of the comments from nursing leaders throughout the United States. You may want to use this information as you spread the word about nursing's value.
