This new compilation of studies on Christian religion and globalization has its background in the "Currents in World Christianity Project" (formerly the "North Atlantic Missiology Project") which is based in the University of Cambridge and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts of Philadelphia. As Brian Stanley, the former Director of Currents in World Christianity Project and new Chair of World Christianity and Director of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World at the University of Edinburgh (from January 2009 onwards) notes in his preface to the book, the project "combined an interest in modern history of Protestant missions with an emphasis on the religious aspects of globalization". All contributions assembled in this book derive from the first international conference of this research project held in Hammanskraal campus of the University of Pretoria in 2001 and focus particularly on the complex dynamics which shape the recent expansion of Christianity, particularly evangelical and Pentecostal forms of Christianity.
