At no point in its history has Birmingham, Ala.-based Regions Financial Corporation been a small company. Formed in 1971 as Alabama's first multi-bank holding company, it came out of the gates with a total of $543 million in assets and 40 banking locations.

However, it has always been a strong lender to small businesses. And, it brought that track record of small-business lending when it entered Mississippi in 2004.

In 2005, Regions placed third in the category of small business lending by large banks and bank holding companies in a study conducted by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). (SBA defines these loans at $1 million or less.) This is not just SBA-backed lending, either. The ranking represents all small-business lending.
